Video: Cliff collapse nearly crushes kayakers on Lake Superior
A group of 10 kayakers were enjoying the beautiful weather while paddling on Lake Superior when a collapsing cliff suddenly made their excursion dangerous.
As reported by Global News, the group was part of a kayaking tour that brings people out on the lake to admire the sandstone cliffs that are approximately 60 metres tall.
Van Ouellette-Ballas, one of the kayak trip guides with Northern Waters Adventures, said that she noticed one rock fall from the unstable cliff before massive chunks the size of "two vans" crashed down moments later.
The collapsing cliff created a large splash that missed the group by just 15 metres.
Jon Smithers, a nature photographer, was one of the kayakers on the tour and was recording footage of the area with a drone. When he noticed the rocks falling he turned the drone towards the cliff and was able to capture the shocking collapse, which can be seen in the video above.
Cliff collapses occur naturally as they erode over time. They can be caused by a weakening of the structure due to changes in temperature and precipitation, specifically when seasons transition.
