Bad news: We're in the midst of a Sriracha sauce shortage

Running low on hot sauce? We've got bad news.

California-based Huy Fong Foods, the maker of the Sriracha hot sauce we know and love, has suspended sales and production of its famous condiments due to adverse weather conditions that have caused a severe chili shortage.

“Currently, due to weather conditions affecting the quality of chili peppers, we now face a more severe shortage of chili,” the company said in an April email to customers.“Unfortunately, this is out of our control and without this essential ingredient we are unable to produce any of our products.”

Huy Fong Foods confirmed the email Wednesday, Bloomberg reports.

All orders submitted on or after April will not hit store shelves until the first week of September, and the company is not accepting any new orders in the meantime.

Hot sauce lovers took to social media to voice their dismay.

Huy Fong Foods makes a variety of condiments, but it is best known for its sriracha sauce. The company makes all its products using a red jalapeño hybrid pepper, grown exclusively on a California farm.
