B.C. heat could put a dent in salmon numbers

The heat that settled over B.C. in June is continuing to impact local species.

It's the time of year when salmon return from the ocean to their spawning grounds - but this year, many salmon in the Pacific Northwest won't make it to their final destination.

Salmon and trout are cold-water specialists and the recent heat forces the fish to work even harder, putting strain on their hearts and bodies.

The heat dome that hit B.C. in June killed about 1 billion sea creatures, and experts fear there will be mass casualties for salmon as well.

This could impact their population numbers for years to come, putting additional stress on an already-beleaguered species.
