Planning a trip to Mexico? Watch out for these monkey look-alikes

The Weather Network's Nathan Coleman brings us along on his Mexican vacation to show us the wildlife he met on his getaway.

Thinking of escaping the Canadian cold and venturing south to a warmer climate? I recently took a trip to Mexico, and I have to say, sitting poolside and drinking piña colada was a highlight, but my favourite part was seeing all of the species of animals native to Mexico.

When I first arrived at my resort in Riviera Maya, I thought I was seeing monkeys everywhere. Long tail. In a tree. Nope. They were actually white-nosed coatis, sometimes referred to as Mexican raccoons.

While they do sleep in trees, if you walk around late at night, you may see them roaming in big groups.

Seeing those little glowing eyes may be a bit freaky, but they’re mostly rutting with their noses, looking for insects, and they can even eat tarantulas and scorpions, so it’s good to have them around. As with any wild animal, it's advised not to feed them yourself.
