Utah police ask public to stop setting up hammocks on power lines

Police in Utah's Weber County recently took to social media to warn people against setting up hammocks on power lines.

People are known to climb up the tower to take in the scenic view, but police say the activity is extremely dangerous and can result in falls or electrocution.

There's also the added risk of getting stuck up there during a storm. Just last week, Weber County was hit with a severe thunderstorm, resulting in several flooded homes and widespread power outages.

Extreme hammocking is a niche that started gaining popularity around 2016. Fueled by social media uploads, the hobby involved hanging hammocks from precarious heights, sometimes hundreds of metres off the ground.

Police will be partnering with the local power utility to increase patrols in the area.
