Take a peek inside a wigwam at NAIG 2023

North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) - TWN

The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) is billed as being 50 per cent sport and 50 per cent Indigenous culture.

At the cultural village set up on the Halifax Common for NAIG 2023, you can go inside a wigwam, the traditional home of the Mi’kmaq people. The poles used to construct it are about three-and-a-half metres in length.

Birch bark and smaller, lighter poles were used by the Mi’kmaq to create a wall-like structure. Wigwams would be lived in year round and were adjusted to suit the seasons.

Inside, a fire pit made of stone would be in the centre of the wigwam. Animal fur and hide would be used as a door-like structure.
