'Barge Chilling Beach' sign unveiled on Vancouver shoreline
It's not clear how long the temporary sign will remain in place.
Vancouver officials have dubbed the shoreline "Barge Chilling Beach" in reference to the now infamous vessel that crashed into the seawall during the November 15 storm event.
The new sign is a play on East Vancouver's much-coveted Dude Chilling Park sign in East Vancouver. It was revealed Wednesday at Sunset Beach, not far from the barge.
Speaking with CTV board chair Stewart Mackinnon said it was intended to cheer people up after a long year.
"Sometimes, for some folks, it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If we can add a little bit of joy and fun to their lives, I think that's money well spent," he said.
The sign is temporary, and will likely remain in place as long as the vessel does.
Officials are in the process of assessing the barge and repairing any damages so it can be towed away, but when that will happen remains unclear.
According to the CBC, it has not moved in a month despite several attempts to dislodge it.
The barge has become a popular tourist attraction, drawing in crowds and inspiring memes online.
