Special Weather Statement
Brief, but rapidly accumulating snowfall is expected.
Locations: Avalon and Burin Peninsulas.
Total snowfall: 5 cm along the coast to 10 cm or more over higher terrain.
Time span: Thursday morning.
Remarks: Conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly Thursday morning as a narrow band of intense snowfall moves across eastern Newfoundland. Although total amounts will be modest relative to recent events, snow will accumulate over a short period of two to three hours at rates of 3 to 4 cm per hour. These high snowfall rates will lead to poor visibility, especially where coinciding with gusty winds and blowing snow.
Following the burst of heavy snow, temperatures are forecast to rise above zero, bringing a brief period of light rain or drizzle before skies begin to clear. The milder weather will cause the fresh snowfall to become dense and heavy, making shovelling and cleanup more difficult and adding to ongoing challenges in areas that have recently received substantial snowfall.
Snow and slush accumulation may make travel slow or hazardous. Roads and walkways could become slick and difficult to navigate. Allow extra time to reach your destination, or consider adjusting travel plans to avoid the most adverse conditions.
