Yellow Watch - Severe Thunderstorm

Description

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.

What:
Very strong wind gusts up to 90 km/h.
Hail up to toonie sized hail.
Risk of a tornado.

When:
This afternoon until early evening.

Additional information:
Thunderstorms capable of very strong wind gusts and large hail are possible this afternoon and early evening. There is also a risk of a tornado.

Torrential downpours giving heavy rainfall amounts are likely. Refer to the special weather statement that is in effect for further information regarding rainfall.

Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.

Description

Additional heavy rainfall possible. The ground, already near saturation, has a limited capacity to absorb this rainfall.

What:
Additional rainfall amounts of 20 to 50 mm.

When:
Today through Thursday.

Additional information:
Several more rounds of showers and thunderstorms are possible until the end of the day Thursday. Portions of the region have received significant rainfall amounts over the last few days. As a result, further rainfall could have significant impacts. Rainfall warnings may be issued for some regions.

Rainfall amounts will likely be highly variable across the region.

Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Don't drive through flooded roadways. Avoid low-lying areas.
