Recommended Action
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Call 511 for road information. Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order.

Extreme Cold Watch

Description

What: For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as zero expected. For the Extreme Cold Watch, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 5 below possible.
Where: Eastern Chesterfield (Including Col. Heights), Charles City, Brunswick, Dinwiddie, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Prince George (including Hopewell and Petersburg), Greensville, and Sussex Counties.
When: For the Cold Weather Advisory, from 1 AM Saturday to 1 AM EST Sunday. For the Extreme Cold Watch, from late Saturday night through Sunday morning.
Impacts: Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes.

Recommended Action

Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.
