Special Weather Statement

Issued at Wed 8:14 PM Dec. 31
Issued by: National Weather Service
Description

Some light snow will initially occur early tonight, however a strong Arctic cold front will pose the threat for dangerous snow squalls later this evening. Snow squalls produce brief yet heavy snow and strong wind gusts with near whiteout conditions. This can result in hazardous travel conditions as roads quickly become snow-covered and slick. For general timing, dangerous squalls will be possible from Steuben County and Finger Lakes to Greater Syracuse areas between 10 PM and Midnight. They will press southeast to include the remainder of the Twin Tiers to Cortland and Utica areas between 11 PM and 2 AM, and then from the Interstate 88 corridor and Catskills to the Wyoming Valley and Poconos between 1 AM and 4 AM. Monitor conditions closely if traveling overnight as we switch into the New Year, including for possible Snow Squall Warnings. If impacted by a squall, use extreme caution or consider even delaying travel plans until after the threat ends.
