Coastal Flood Warning

Description

What: For the Coastal Flood Warning, 2 to 4 feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet expected in the surf zone.
Where: Ocracoke Island.
When: For the Coastal Flood Warning, from 4 PM Saturday to midnight EST Sunday night. For the High Surf Advisory, from 7 PM Saturday to 7 PM EST Sunday.
Impacts: Up to 2 to 4 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways resulting in a low threat of property damage. Some roads and low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes adjacent to the waterfront will experience shallow flooding. Portions of Highway 12 may be inundated and impassable.

Recommended Action

Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

High Wind Warning

What: For the High Wind Warning, north winds 40 to 50 mph with gusts up to 70 mph expected. For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 8 above expected.
Where: Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island.
When: For the High Wind Warning, from 7 PM this evening to 4 PM EST Sunday. For the Cold Weather Advisory, from 1 AM Sunday to 10 AM EST Monday.
Impacts: Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.

Recommended Action

Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
