Flash Flood Warning

Description

At 1114 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 0.75 to 1.5 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
Hazard: Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

Impact: Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Flatbush, Flushing, Bayonne, Hoboken, Coney Island, Secaucus, Harrison, Todt Hill, Crown Heights, The Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Midtown Manhattan, RFK Bridge, Jackson Heights, Forest Hills, Canarsie, Bay Ridge and Astoria. This includes the following Event Location
S: Brooklyn Bridge Park, Sports Illustrated Stadium and USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Recommended Action

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

What: Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
Where: Portions of northeast New Jersey, including the following counties, Bergen, Essex and Passaic and southeast New York, including the following counties, Bronx, Nassau, New York (Manhattan), Queens and Westchester.
When: Until 145 AM EDT.
Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.
Additional Details: - At 1146 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts of around 0.5 to 1 inch are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. - Some locations that will experience flooding include Yonkers, Paterson, New Rochelle, Flushing, Passaic, Mott Haven, Bloomfield, East Tremont, Hackensack, Bergenfield, Paramus, Lyndhurst, Rutherford, Ridgefield, Great Neck, Laguardia Airport, Throgs Neck Bridge, Harlem, Riverdale and Bayside. - This includes the following Event Location
