Description

What: Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches. Locally higher amounts are possible, especially in Berrien County, MI. N-NW Winds gusting as high as 40 to 45 mph, highest near Lake Michigan. This will lead to blowing and drifting snow, especially on E-W oriented roads.
Where: Portions of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.
When: Until 1 PM EST /noon CST/ Thursday.
Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening.
Additional Details: This evening and Thursday morning commutes will see the greatest impacts to travel. The Thursday evening commute may see lingering impacts.

Recommended Action

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1. Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary. During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions.
