At 610 PM EDT, emergency management reported thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2 and 3.5 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is already occurring. Water rescues have been reported in Spring Valley and Nanuet.
Hazard: Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

Impact: Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include New City, Paramus, Monsey, Nanuet, Nyack, Tappan, Pearl River, Oradell, Norwood, Orangeburg, Upper Nyack, Spring Valley, Westwood, Hillsdale, River Vale, Valley Cottage, Washington Township, Park Ridge, Airmont and Closter.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. If you are in a basement, be prepared to move to a higher floor.

Additional Details: - At 616 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. - Some locations that will experience flooding include Paterson, Wayne, Ridgewood, Hawthorne, Fair Lawn, Wyckoff, Oakland, Glen Rock, Franklin Lakes, Waldwick, North Haledon, Haledon, Midland Park, Allendale and Prospect Park. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
