Cold Weather Advisory
What: For the Wind Advisory, northwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected. For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 35 below zero expected.
Where: Southern Cook County. This includes the Tribal Lands of the Grand Portage Reservation.
When: For the Wind Advisory, until 6 AM CST Thursday. For the Cold Weather Advisory, from midnight tonight to 10 AM CST Thursday.
Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 35 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.
Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside. Pay particular attention to people celebrating the New Year outdoors and ensure everyone makes it back indoors safely, including anyone traveling home after festivities.
