Description

The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING for the following areas: NWS Medford OR - CAZ082 (South Central Siskiyou County).
What: AVALANCHE WARNING. The Forest Service Mount Shasta Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche warning for Mount Shasta area backcountry of Northern California. Two weather systems will impact the area this week. The first of two waves will impact the area through Wednesday. The second wave arrives late Wednesday evening and continues through Friday. Very dangerous avalanche conditions are likely, especially during peak intensity late Wednesday night through Friday.
Where: Avalanche terrain of Mount Shasta, Castle Lake, the Eddy Mountains, and Ash Creek Butte area east of Mount Shasta. Large avalanche run out zones on Mount Shasta, like Avalanche Gulch and the Old Ski Bowl should be avoided until storm snow has time to settle. Both these areas are easily accessed from the Bunny Flat trailhead, where many holiday visitors will enjoy the snow. Know where you are going if traveling in the backcountry.
When: In effect now through 4 PM PST Friday afternoon.
Impacts: Up to 5 feet of snow in terrain above 6000 feet today through Friday afternoon. Wind gusts in excess of 60 mph. Expect fluctuating snow levels.
Precautionary / Preparedness Actions: Very dangerous avalanche conditions. Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avalanches may run long distances and can run into mature forests, valley floors, or flat terrain. Check the avalanche forecast for daily details.
