Blustery conditions to persist across Newfoundland through Sunday
Sunday’s winds will be a far cry from the 100+ km/h gusts some areas saw early Saturday morning, but conditions will remain breezy as a low-pressure system lingers.
Thanksgiving weekend got off to a blustery start in parts of Newfoundland as wind gusts higher than 100 km/h buffeted the region. The winds came courtesy of a low-pressure system that rapidly intensified near the island. Conditions will remain breezy through Sunday as the low lingers near the island. SUNDAY AND BEYOND: WINDS WIND DOWN THROUGH THE DAY, TEMPERATURE DIVIDE
Strong winds blew across parts of Newfoundland on Saturday. The strongest winds occurred before sunrise, with a 111 km/h wind gust recorded in Bonavista and a 104 km/h gust measured at St. John’s International Airport.
Winds calmed a bit through the day, but conditions will remain quite breezy through the day on Sunday. Parts of eastern Newfoundland could continue experiencing 70-80 km/h gusts that won't diminish until the evening.
Temperature-wise, Newfoundland will come in much cooler than the Maritimes for most of this weekend. Single-digit highs are expected in the former on Sunday, while the Maritimes will see values into the mid- and upper teens.
Daytime highs will improve on Thanksgiving Monday, as high pressure nudges in from the west. Newfoundland will also see a bump in temperatures for Thanksgiving Monday, though returning cooler than seasonal for most of next week.
