Wally the walrus spotted again

Thursday, August 5th 2021, 3:10 pm - Guess who's back.

Our friend Wally the walrus has been spotted again, this time relaxing on a rigid inflatable boat off County Waterford, Ireland.

Wally has had a busy summer, travelling to the coasts of Britain, France, and Spain.

The most recent footage was taken August 4, captured by John Coveney, who told Storyful the walrus was observed from a far distance by Seal Rescue Island volunteers.

Wally first made headlines in March when he was spotted on the shorelines of western Ireland and is believed to have drifted there on an iceberg from the Arctic, possibly after falling asleep.

Walruses are rarely seen in that part of the world. According to the BBC, citing the Irish Dolphin and Whale Group, it represents the third such sighting in Ireland since 1999.

Wally has achieved celebrity status, but some locals consider him to be a nuisance. He is often seen climbing onto boats to have a nap, sometimes capsizing or damaging them.

Experts are keeping a close eye on him and hope he will eventually find his way back home.
