Volcanic eruption in Russia disrupts flights in northwestern British Columbia
A volcano eruption in Russia caused dozens of flight cancellations in northwestern British Columbia Thursday.
One of the most active volcanoes on the far eastern part of the Kamchatka peninsula erupted Tuesday, and a few days later, British Columbia is witnessing the effects.
The Shiveluch volcano sent a large ash cloud 10 kilometres into the sky. The eruption covered immediate areas in dust and triggered local aviation warnings before spreading across the Pacific and impacting air travel across the region.
Approximately 4,300 km away from the eruption, the ash cloud prompted Air Canada to cancel some of its regional flights to and from Terrace and Prince Rupert.
Other airlines, including WestJet and Alaska Airlines, also cancelled more than two dozen flights due to the ash. Depending on the direction of the cloud, more cancellations may occur.
Terrace is a major service hub for the northwestern portion of British Columbia. If the ash from the eruption continues to impact flights, there could be lingering affects for businesses that rely on air transportation.
