Watch pavement buckle and crumble into large sinkhole

Public works and emergency officials in Rapid City, South Dakota, responded to an expanding sinkhole on Whitewood Street on Thursday, May 30, fire officials said.

Video posted by the Rapid City Fire Department to Facebook shows pavement crumbling as the sinkhole widened on Thursday.

The Rapid City Journal reported that the sinkhole measured at least 12 metres deep and about and 7 metres wide.

"The public is encouraged to avoid the area as the hole continues to widen," officials said Thursday.

"There is no utilities disruption in the area."

Roads surrounding the area were closed to the public as crews surveyed the scene.
