Travel remains difficult in Quebec as winds generate blowing snow

While snow continues into Wednesday, it will begin to subside across Quebec as the powerful winter storm exits the province.

While most of the winter storm has trekked through Quebec, snow continues to fall but will subside through the day Wednesday. With only light, additional amounts left, blustery winds will continue to create blowing snow, so travel will continue to remain hazardous. In fact, blizzard conditions will linger for coastal areas of the Gaspé Peninsula into Wednesday morning. Beyond the storm, temperatures will climb steadily as the week progresses, even hitting above seasonal values by Friday. For what below.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Snow winds down Wednesday, but strong winds will create blowing snow, difficult travel remains

  • Most of the snow has already fallen, with just light, additional amounts expected

  • Temperatures jump late week, even rising to above seasonal norms

WEDNESDAY: TRAVEL WILL REMAIN TRICKY AS SNOW WINDS DOWN

Although numerous winter weather warnings linger in Quebec, it appears the worst of the snowfall is coming to an end. Snow will continue to diminish through Wednesday in central, southern and eastern Quebec. Most of the heavy snow has fallen, so only light additional amounts are expected before it moves out of the province.

However, strong, northeasterly winds gusting in the 80-100 km/h range will persist along the St. Lawrence River, east of Québec City, through the morning before easing off Wednesday afternoon.

Blizzard conditions hang on for coastal areas of the Gaspé Peninsula into Wednesday morning before they improve for the afternoon.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow," says Environment Canada in the winter storm warning for Rimouski-Mont-Joli.

Forecasters are also watching the potential for a rather active and changeable pattern next week as the region will be the battle zone between strongly contrasting airmasses -- very warm to the south and frigid to the northwest.
