Teen's random act of kindness goes viral

Friday, August 30th 2019, 4:54 pm - Police are looking for a teenager in Independence, Missouri -- but not because he did anything wrong.

That's right -- he's landed on the local police department's "most wanted" list for something he did right.

His random act of kindness was captured in a now-viral photograph, and authorities want to thank him.

A police officer had stopped for a bite to eat Sunday when he noticed the teen helping an elderly woman in a parking lot.

"It was pouring down rain, and all the sudden I see this teenager running across the parking lot taking his coat off," Officer Joe Holt of the Independence Police Dept. tells CNN.

Holt sat in his patrol car and watched as the teen took off his jacket and draped it over the elderly woman who was struggling to get into her car. He then escorted her to her vehicle.

"I was just totally thrilled by it and I couldn't let it go unnoticed," Officer Holt, who snapped the picture, said.

He then followed the boy to his mom's van, so he could tell her what her son had done.

"She teared up pretty good. It was a moment between the both of us," he said.

"I mean I teared up a little bit. I'm a parent as well. So, I told her that I was very impressed with him and that he should be proud."

Holt posted the photo to Facebook and says he would like to reward him with dinner.

"He's the hero. I'm just the photographer in this situation. So it's wherever he wants to go. It's on my dime. So he can pick."

Holt is holding an extended public invitation to the teenager to reach out to the Independence Police Department.
