PHOTOS: Tornado damages homes and downs trees in Alberta community

Saturday, July 9th 2022, 2:50 pm - Damage was reported near Bergen amid Thursday's violent storms in southern Alberta

--

On Thursday, severe thunderstorms developed over central and southern Alberta and persisted through the evening, producing at least one confirmed tornado, large hail, strong wind gusts and localized flooding.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) received the first report of a funnel cloud/tornado near Bergen around 2:32 p.m. MDT and the last report near Shantz around 3:10 p.m. MDT, as the thunderstorm moved to the east. Damage to at least four houses and many downed trees were reported as a result of this tornado.

One of the more notable tornadic events was caught on camera at around 3:30 p.m. MDT by The Weather Network’s Kyle Brittain:

Structural damage was reported east of Bergen - a community located over an hour north of Calgary - shortly afterward.

RCMP told CBC News that a tornado flattened one home and seriously damaged four others southeast of Sundre.

Police officials said one person suffered minor injuries, but no one was seriously hurt as a result of these storms.

These reports led to ECCC, in collaboration with the Northern Tornadoes Project, facilitating an on-site storm damage survey. As of Saturday morning, the tornado has yet to be given a damage rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

In addition to the tornado, the storms also featured strong winds, heavy rain, and large hail across the region. In fact, ECCC received reports of hen egg-sized (five cm) and golf ball-sized hail (4.5 cm) in Jumping Pound and Oyen, respectively.
