M7.8 earthquake near the Alaska coast generates tsunami warnings

No tsunamis, injuries or damage were reported following the magnitude 7.8 quake that struck off the Alaska coast Tuesday night.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake centred near the Alaska coast Tuesday night local time prompted tsunami warnings that have since been called off.

The tremor occurred 105 kilometres south-southeast of Perryville, Ala., registering at a depth of 28 kilometres, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

A tsunami warning had been issued following the earthquake, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It was issued for south Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, from Kennedy Entrance, Ala. to Unimak Pass, Ala., according to the Tsunami Warning Center.

Later confirmed by The National Weather Service and other agencies, there is no tsunami threat for other U.S. and Canadian Pacific coasts. There have been no reports of damage or injuries at this time.

There have been at least 11 after shocks ranging from magnitudes of 3.9 to 6.1, according to CNN.
