Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world

The Stromboli volcano, one of the most active in the world, has erupted and released a massive plume of smoke. It is located on the island of Stromboli off the north coast of Sicily.

The volcano, which makes up the entire island, has been erupting continuously for thousands of years and most recently erupted in July 2019.

Onlookers were reportedly shocked and frightened by the massive explosion, and anxious residents are concerned that there could be a third major eruption, according to La Repubblica.

During the previous eruption in July, one person was killed by falling stones and the sound of the explosion was heard over 20 kilometres away.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reports that this explosion was of "high intensity" and so far there have been no casualties or damages reported.

The Stromboli volcano is known as the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean" and is famous for dramatic nighttime scenes of glowing lava. Stromboli typically rumbles with small eruptions every 20 to 30 minutes and is a popular tourist destination.
