People are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of maintaining the exterior and body of their vehicles in spring. New rustproofing treatments are one such example. Tasks like cleaning, aesthetic maintenance, and checking and replacing certain accessories are key to keeping everything working properly and preserving a vehicle’s resale value.

Appropriate tires

Just as proper winter tires are necessary for facing the rigours of our coldest season, so are summer tires required for driving safely on hot pavement. Rubber designed for snow and ice is susceptible to damage at higher temperatures. By having two separate sets of tires, you increase their longevity while getting better traction. “It’s important to check the air pressure,” says Michel Gélinas, General Manager of a Toyota dealership in Quebec. “Tires lose air when in storage. It’s also important to check that the treads are in good condition to prevent hydroplaning. A worn-out tire will be less effective at clearing out the water.”

The vehicle body

Nowadays, vehicle owners plan to keep their vehicles for a long time. You have to maintain the body to maintain the resale value. Spring is when you want to give the paint a thorough cleaning before applying wax. “This is becoming common practice,” Gélinas says. “The advantage is that it maintains the body’s shine while preventing corrosion. Particles that build up on the paint can accelerate the appearance of corrosion damage. The vehicle’s coating needs to be decontaminated in the spring. People understand that their vehicles need this routine maintenance. When it comes to reselling, well-maintained vehicles are much more appealing to buyers.”

Undercarriage

Winter is rough on the steel components of your vehicle’s undercarriage. While a thorough wash of the vehicle exterior is necessary to restore shine, the parts you don’t see also require attention. Various elements of the undercarriage, such as the exhaust system, suspension system and steering components, are at risk of wearing out prematurely or rusting more quickly.
