School during COVID: Helpful resources for parents and students

After nearly seven months at home, millions of school-aged children have returned to school during a global pandemic -- and in some communities, that return coincided with an uptick in new COVID-19 cases.

Nationally, schools are taking precautions to lessen the risk of COVID-19 infection, but those precautions may look different depending on the jurisdiction.

Here’s where you can find the latest information about COVID-19 in schools.

ATLANTIC CANADA

Newfoundland and Labrador

A 44-page document detailing back-to-school plans is available on the provincial government's website. Additional information, including child care guidelines and recommendations from K-12 students, can be found here.

Prince Edward Island

Parents who would like to learn more about safety protocols, daily routines, and educational support programs can access information on the Government of PEI's website.

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia officials have created an extensive back-to-school plan that provides guidelines for the academic year, based on direction from Public Health, IWK Health Centre, and the Provincial Pediatric Advisory Group. Feedback based on surveys from more than 28,000 families and students is also included.

Quebec

Information on school activities, including extra-curriculars, as well as frequently asked questions is accessible at quebec.ca.

Ontario

The Government of Ontario is providing an up-to-date breakdown of the number of reported COVID-19 cases in Ontario schools.

THE PRAIRIES

Manitoba

The latest information on schooling in Manitoba can be found on this frequently-updated microsite.

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan's Safe School Plan -- which includes a weekly monitoring report and resources for parents and teachers -- is available at saskatchewan.ca.

Alberta

Alberta.ca is offering parents and educators an interactive status map that tracks COVID-19 cases in schools by region.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

B.C.'s full back-to-school plan includes safety guidelines and information on increased funding to stop the spread of COVID-19.

THE TERRITORIES

Northwest Territories

All of NT's 49 schools are practicing increased social distancing and enhanced safety measures this academic year. Read more on the Government of NT's website.

Yukon

The Government of Yukon has compiled a [back-to-school safety checklist] and has put together contingency plans in case schools are forced to close due to an outbreak.

Nunavut

Back-to-school protocols and information on how to perform a COVID-19 self-assessment has been made available online courtesy of the Government of Nunavut.

NATIONWIDE

Individuals interested in a broader look at the situation in Canada's schools may want to visit Masks 4 Canada, a national tracker of COVID-19 cases in Canada's schools, compiled by a team of "physicians, data scientists and other advocates," according to CTV.
