Ontario will feel the full force of winter in the coming days as additional rounds of snow and colder air descend on the province.

The prolonged break from winter's wrath has come to an end as snow and cold temperatures make their way back into Ontario -- and with a force. After Wednesday's storm that brought 10-20+ cm of snow to the region, multiple rounds of snow and colder temperatures will take hold for the final full week of January and as we kick off February.

An active pattern locked into place will create several more opportunities for snow in Ontario, starting with two clipper systems that will be moving through the province this weekend.

The first clipper system pushed into northwestern Ontario early in the day Friday, where it will then reach southern Ontario overnight Friday into Saturday morning.

This system will bring modest but widespread snowfall totals, with about 5 cm for most areas. Folks in the traditional snowbelts around Lake Superior, Lake Huron, and Georgian Bay could expect slightly more, with between 5-10 cm of fresh snow falling through Saturday morning.

There will be a brief break during the day Saturday before yet another clipper system arrives in time for Saturday evening.

This system looks to be a bit more potent than the clipper it follows, bringing slightly more moisture with it. We’ll see precipitation begin across southwestern Ontario Saturday evening, before moving into the GTA by late evening. Eastern Ontario will see precipitation beginning in the overnight hours on Saturday, with the snow ending across the province throughout Sunday afternoon.

Widespread snowfall accumulations of 5-10 cm are expected, with a thin swath bringing 10-15 cm from Lake Huron through to eastern Ontario and extending into southern Quebec. Warmer temperatures nudging in from the south could allow for some mixed precipitation and even rain to mix in along the northern shores of Lake Erie, but this will be a snow event for most everyone.

This wintry setup will remain locked in place for the final days of January and into early February, as the region will be the battleground between frigid weather to the west versus mild weather to the south and east.

A couple more systems are expected to track along this boundary next week and bring more snow to the region, but the timing is still uncertain.

Frigid weather and lake-effect snow are likely late next week and weekend.
