Remarkable display of mammatus clouds line southern Ontario's skies Thursday
Social media erupted early Thursday morning, as remarkable views of mammatus clouds took over the skies across southern Ontario.
"Mammatus clouds are associated with sinking air. These clouds do not cause severe weather themselves, however, they do usually form beneath the anvil of a thunderstorm," explains Jessie Uppal, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

In this particular case, there was enough instability within the atmosphere to fuel a line of thunderstorms in Michigan early Thursday morning.
This line brought on extensive lightning as it continued to track into portions of southwestern Ontario.
The sinking of air tied to the thunderstorms that moved into the southwest caught the light of the sunrise, making for some stunning mammatus clouds early in the morning.
