PHOTOS: Aug. 27 storms spawn two tornadoes in southern Ontario
Severe thunderstorms pushed their way through parts of southern Ontario Thursday afternoon, igniting tornado warnings, uprooting trees, downing power lines and causing power outages.
On Saturday, the Western University-based Northern Tornadoes Project confirmed two tornadoes were produced from the storms. Both were rated EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF).
In Mount Carmel, the twister was spotted at 2:30 p.m., boasting maximum winds of 155 km/h. The track length was 7.1 kilometres. It severely damaged a century barn. The storm also knocked over several hydro poles.
The second occurred in Union, seen at 3:15 p.m., with maximum winds of 150 km/h. The track length was 5.2 kilometres, causing a small century barn to shift its foundation.
As well, a funnel cloud was spotted in St. Thomas at 3:05 p.m.
The Thursday storms also uprooted trees and power lines in multiple locales in the southwest, causing power outages. As well, there was frequent lightning and heavy downpours with the severe thunderstorms.
