PHOTOS: Alberta skies blow up with menacing clouds as severe storms roll in

The skies over parts of Alberta Friday evening were filled to the brim with towering, threatening cumulonimbus clouds, highlighted by the presence of mammatus underneath.

Alberta has been stuck in a stormy pattern as of late, including a confirmed EF-1 tornado near Nanton on July 12 and Edmonton's Rogers Place taking a wind, flood hit from severe thunderstorms on Thursday. It's to no surprise then that severe thunderstorms fired up again Friday evening in central parts of the province.

Storms tracked through southern Alberta, including in the Calgary and Medicine Hat areas, prompting warnings from Environment Canada. The storms were reported to have brought heavy rain, wind gusts, frequent lightning and hail in some locales. As some of the cells developed and moved through, the skies were teeming with billowing cumulonimbus and mammatus clouds.

It didn't take long for stunning imagery of the threatening storm clouds, as well as lightning, to be posted on social media. Below is a selection of what is currently making the rounds.
