Tornado, storm warnings dropped but severe risk lingers in Ontario

Tornado warnings were issued in the southwest shortly before midday as storms crept toward the GTA, though they were dropped around two hours later. The severe storm risk continues into the evening in Ontario.

Intense humidity is a major fuel for thunderstorm risk, and Sunday's storms have delivered in spades so far, prompting multiple tornado warnings in the southwestern and central parts of Ontario earlier Sunday, but have since been dropped. Beyond, severe storms remain possible for the southwest, eastern Ontario into the evening hours. A closer look, below.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Humidex values in the high 30s, low 40s Sunday

  • Sunday evening storm potential, with most of the marginal severe risk in the southwest, east

  • Temperatures, humidity will relax somewhat early next week

  • Keep an eye on weather ALERTS in your area

SUNDAY: COLD FRONT TRIGGERS POWERFUL STORMS

A handful of strong storms lingered into Sunday morning in some parts of central and eastern Ontario, which set the stage for a more violent round in the late morning that triggered tornado warnings in the southwest and parts of cottage country. By the time all of them had dropped a couple of hours later, they had at one point reached into the western GTA.

All severe thunderstorm warnings have expired, too, but heading into the evening, there is still a chance for much of the southern half of the province to at least see an islolated thunderstorm, though the severe potential will be confined to the southwest and eastern areas.

ONRISK (2)

Today's storms have been marked by strong winds, frequent lightning, and torrential local downpours, fuelled by very high atmospheric moisture values due to the humidity.

Temperature-wise, daytime highs have been at or above 30°C for most locales Sunday, but the intense humidity that has sparked the day's storms have made it feel like the high 30s or low 40s.

BEYOND: A LITTLE LESS HEAT, BUT STILL ABOVE SEASONAL

This extreme heat hangs on somewhat into next week, where a slight easing of these conditions beckons for the late week. Though more comfortable and sunny, it will still be above-seasonal for most people.

We are also watching the potential for a significant system to track into the Great Lakes region late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with periods of widespread rain and possible thunderstorms, though it is too early for any concrete details.
