Climber airlifted out of area called 'Certain Death'

Wednesday, May 12th 2021, 3:12 pm - The area is noted for being difficult to climb.

A Utah climber was recently rescued from a mountain area called "Certain Death," Salt Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue said in a Facebook post.

Two climbers were looking for new routes when one pulled off a large rock the size of a refrigerator, causing it to roll on top of him. The other climber managed to pull it off, but a rescue team had to be called.

Ground teams were sent to retrieve the injured man around 4 p.m. Sunday, but were unable to reach him due to the nature of his injuries and location.

He was airlifted out of the site in a rescue effort that took about 90 minutes, the sheriff's office said.

"Certain Death” is located in Utah's Little Cottonwood Canyon. It's noted for being difficult to climb due to a crack in the landscape.

Officials have not provided a status update on the climber.
