Soggy pattern could bring minutes of sunshine to B.C. this week
Another gloomy week is on tap for much of British Columbia, but some lucky folks might catch a fleeting ray of sunshine.

It’s been quite the stretch of soggy and gloomy weather to start the month across B.C., and it’s a pattern that shows no signs of letting up for the next week as a stubborn jet stream continues to fling its drear toward the South Coast.

The stagnant pattern that’s brought B.C. its somber start to the year is courtesy of a straight jet stream. The steadiness of a straight jet stream locked in this pattern for the long haul, casting a pall over B.C. while folks down south in California deal with a constant onslaught of atmospheric rivers.

How steady is the pattern? Just take a peek at Vancouver’s forecast through next weekend:
You could paint that daily forecast on a wall and be right for six out of the next seven days.
The only respite in the foreseeable future could arrive on Tuesday, when breaks in the clouds could allow for brief cascades of sunshine to spill between the cracks before the skies fill in once again.
We’ll see a continuing series of systems wash ashore from the Pacific over the next week. None of these systems will be a big deal on their own, but collectively they’ll add up to another soggy and gloomy week across the province.
Much of southwestern B.C. can expect rainfall totals of 50-100+ mm over the next seven days, with the heaviest totals falling across the usual spots where terrain enhances the precipitation.
Models are hinting at a drier pattern for the South Coast heading toward the second half of the month.
