Heavy rain to taper off in B.C. before another Pacific low moves in Monday

Sunday, November 17th 2019, 12:00 pm - Heavy rain will gradually ease through Sunday afternoon and evening, but another low will move in Monday afternoon

To say this weekend was a washout for most of B.C.'s coasts is an understatement, as the province was hit by a deluge of heavy rainfall -- all thanks to an atmospheric river. There is good news, finally, as the rain is expected to ease off by Sunday evening, giving residents a much-needed break. However, the break will be brief, due to another Pacific low moving in Monday afternoon. While this system isn't expected to be as significant as this weekend's, rain will return to the forecast for the South Coast and southern Interior. We take a look at when the rain will end and when the next round moves in, below.

Time to prepare for the season ahead! The Weather Network's Winter Forecast launches Monday, November 18.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Pacific moisture brought heavy rain to province this weekend, snow in higher elevations
  • Rain will taper off through the day Sunday, allowing for a dry day Monday before another Pacific low moves in the afternoon
  • Through Sunday evening, 100-150 mm of rain expected for parts of Vancouver Island
  • Stay on top of ALERTS in your area

WEEKEND WASHOUT FOR PARTS OF THE COAST

While Saturday and Sunday's deluge fell short of ranking as a "pineapple express," it was still considered to be an "atmospheric river" -- a term that describes relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere, like rivers in the sky, that transport most of the water vapour outside of the tropics.

While most of the rainfall warnings have been dropped, precipitation will taper off through Sunday afternoon and evening. Amounts are expected to be quite substantial and some areas could receive upwards of 150 mm by Sunday evening, including parts of Vancouver Island.

As of Sunday morning, west Vancouver has received 69 mm and Squamish has piucked up 74 mm.

The break from the rain on Monday will be shortlived, as another Pacific low will move into the province in the afternoon and bring more rain to the South Coast and southern Interior through the overnight hours and early Tuesday morning.

Stay tuned to the Weather Network for the latest updates.
