Evacuation orders ended near Lethbridge after derailed train leaked octane

A derailed Canadian Pacific Railway train in Alberta prompted evacuation orders for some regions north of Lethbridge on Monday afternoon because it was leaking octane, which is a flammable and volatile component of gasoline.

On Monday around 7:40 a.m. MT the train derailed in the village of Barons, which is approximately 30 kilometres north of Lethbridge, said railway Salem Woodrow to CBC News.

The evacuation orders were issued for the communities between Highway 23 west to Range Road 23-5, Highway 23 east to Range Road 23-2, Township Road 12-2 south to Township Road 11-4 and Keho Lake area and the Keho Lake campground.

Evacuated residents are allowed to return home. Highway 23 remains closed from Township Road 11-4 to Township Road 12-2.
