Earthquake destroys Punta Ventana, one of Puerto Rico's natural wonders

Before and after photos show the loss of a significant tourist attraction for this region of Puerto Rico.

A popular tourist attraction has collapsed in Puerto Rico after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks struck Guayanilla on Monday.

Punta Ventana (Window Point) is a natural rock formation that was created by a variety of factors including mineral and rock composition and centuries of ocean waves crashing against the structure.

The stone arch that resembles a window is one of the biggest tourism draws of Guayanilla and residents are concerned about the loss of a longstanding icon.

The student-run meteorological laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez tweeted before and after images of Punta Ventana that show how the landscape is permanently changed.

Other historic significant structures collapsed during the earthquake, such as a colonial church that was constructed in 1841.

The island was jolted by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday morning and was followed by several aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 5.6. The series of earthquakes and aftershocks left nearly 300,000 people on the island without water service and have caused at least one fatality.
