'Coronosomnia': How the pandemic is creating a sleep epidemic

"The covid Pandemic actually came in the middle of a sleep epidemic. SO North Americans were seeing a lot of sleep issues."

There have been a lot of changes over the past year. One of them, a new issue called 'coronasomnia,' represents a growing number of people reporting an excess of fatigue, exhaustion, and stress as the pandemic disrupts life and builds anxiety.

"We are seeing that about 70 per cent of Americans are sleeping less than 7 hours, which is not optimal, and 30 per cent of them are reporting sleep disturbances on a weekly basis," says Elise Chahine, Editor in Chief of Sleep Foundation.

"And a lot of this is just because of the stress and anxiety associated with the information we are receiving and the constant changes in the news."

Broken routines, remote work, and school, financial losses, vaccine anticipation - it can pile up on any Canadian. If it is affecting your sleep there are ways to get yourself back on track.
