Widespread snow continues to threaten northern Alberta, with the risk for thunderstorms spanning parts of the province on Monday as well.

Sunday night served as a great reminder to keep winter tires on throughout the month of May in Alberta. Snow fell throughout the night in some areas, including the city of Calgary, as temperatures hovered near the freezing mark. The heaviest snow targeted northern sections of the province, with some localized areas set to see up to 20 cm through the day on Monday. The snow however, won't be the only weather-maker for the day, as warming temperatures and an unstable atmosphere set the stage for some isolated thunderstorms through the afternoon hours. More on the timing and impacts, below.

MONDAY: FROM SNOW TO THUNDERSTORM THREAT ALL IN ONE DAY

Even as we inch even closer to the mid-May mark, the threat for wintry weather remains locked in over Alberta.

"Snow fell through the night in parts of Alberta Sunday night, including the city of Calgary and surrounding areas, as temperatures hovered near the freezing mark," says Kelly Sonnenburg, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

While the snow remained light in the city, heavier snow picked up across northern parts of the province, where an additional 5-10 cm of snow is expected through Monday. Some localized areas may see up to 20 cm by the time all is said and done.

The snow is forecast to continue for communities in the higher elevations of the foothills and Rocky Mountains throughout the day. Motorists are urged to leave extra time for the commute and prepare for slick and quickly changing driving conditions on Monday.
