Wabamun Lake Provincial Park Beach Short Term Forecast
Wabamun Provincial Park Beach is located on the northeast corner of the lake in Moonlight Bay near the Village of Wabamun. Wabamun is a Cree word meaning 'mirror'or 'looking glass'. The beach is wide and sandy with a grassy area upshore for picnicing. The swimming area is shallow and deepens gradually. The water in the swimming area is usually clear and warm in July and August. This is a popular beach for campers and day-trippers from Edmonton. This is a kid-friendly beach with all of the amenities for a day at the beach including a playground boat launch and dock. Lots of room to play in and out of the water and less than an hour from Edmonton.The beach was open for the whole of the 2011 2012 2013 and 2014 bathing seasons and has had no water quality advisories in recent years.NOTE: Swimmer's Itch: Six citizen reports of swimmer's itch for Wabamun Lake in July/2014 as of July 18 and there were 2 citizen's reports of swimmer's itch on Wababmun Lake in early July 2013.www.swimmersitch.caFor for more information go to: http://swimmersitch.ca/?page_id=14Things you can do to mitigate the effects of swimmer's itch:1) avoid weedy marshy shallow water areas where birds congregate prolonged exposure.2) apply baby oil to your skin if you are aware that swimmer's itch is present in a swimming area.3) rub briskly with a towel immediately after swimming or wading in the lake4) take the usual steps you would take for itching symptomsSwimmer's itch is caused by the microscopic larvae of a parasite that lives in stagnant and slow-moving water. If itching is severe or if it persists for more than a few days consult your doctor.
