Esquimalt Lagoon - Open Water, BC
Esquimalt Lagoon - Open Water Short Term Forecast
Esquimalt Lagoon is a saltwater lagoon located at the base of the Royal Roads University property in Colwood approximately 7 kilometers to the west of downtown Victoria. This calm shallow lagoon is a migratory bird sanctuary where a variety of birds including ducks swans eagles and herons can often be observed. The long strip of land that separates the lagoon from the ocean (Juan de Fuca Strait) is called Coburg Spit. This sand and gravel barrier stretches nearly 2 kilometers in length and protects the lagoon from the waves and winds off the ocean. The lagoon is connected to the ocean through a tidal channel at the northeast end of the spit. The ocean side of the spit is a long sandy beach with lots of driftwood that is a popular sunbathing spot in the summer. Access to the lagoon is from Ocean Boulevard which runs the length of the spit and includes plenty of parking. There are washroom facilities at the southwest end of the spit. The sampling location for the open ocean side of Esquimalt Lagoon is at the southwest end of the spit on the ocean side near the bathroom facilities.
