Beach Conditions

Moonshine Lake Beach in the day use area of Moonshine Lake PP has a small sandy beach with a playground and picnic tables. The beach area is easy to access from the parking lot and there are washrooms. This is a swimming beach with an unsupervised swimming area.NOTE: An AHS Blue-green algae advisory has been issued for Moonshine Lake: July 14-Nov 6/2014. http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/10200.aspAlberta Health Services Blue-Green Algae Health Advisory was issued for Moonshine Lake in 2013 from August 2-Oct 3/2013. There was a similar advisory issued in August 2012. There are also camping hiking and birdwatching opportunities in the park which is close to Spirit River.Moonshine Lake Provincial Park was expanded in 1998 to link the park with Jack Bird Recreation Area a parcel of land that was donated to the province by the estate of Mr. Jack Bird in 1978. The expansion incorporates a wildlife movement corridor between the two sites and adds a small wetland complex containing a number of beaver ponds. The abundance of birds and waterfowl (including trumpeter swans) makes Jack Bird Pond an excellent bird watching site. Surrounded by diverse boreal mixed wood forests Moonshine Lake offers a variety of year-round recreation and wildlife viewing opportunities. Cast a line for trout from shore from a boat (electric motors only) or through the ice.As early as 1910 this small lake was located on what was known as the Moonshine Trail. The lake was originally called Mirage Lake. Local folklore tells of two men Jack Campbell and Harry Hanrahan who while climbing the steep bank of the north shore of the lake in the 1920's spilled their home-brewed moonshine.
