Beach Conditions

Big Bend Beach is located near the town of Gold River British Columbia. Located near the geographic centre of Vancouver Island Gold River was once a prosperous logging and pulp mill town. When the mill closed in 1988 many residents were forced to relocate. Gold River is a scenic and picturesque town and it has attempted to capitalize on its tourism potential since the close of the mill. It has become a popular spot for eco-hikes and sport fishing.The Nootka Trail can be accessed from Gold River and Big Bend Loop/Gravel Road loop is a popular jogging trail and joggers often choose to cool off in the river after a run.This beach is one of those beaches that will be measured 'as needed' by the Vancouver Island Health Authority. This means that the Vancouver Island Health Authority may keep the beaches open to swimmers despite the potential dangers to swimmers. Fraser Riverkeepers will always mark this beach with a grey rating (unless they begin to monitor the beach more frequently) to warn swimmers of potential dangers. When swimming in these waters always exercise caution.
