Blizzard Warning

Issued at 03:52 Saturday 22 January 2022

Dangerous blizzard continues today with visibilities frequently near zero.

An intense low pressure system near Southampton Island continues to produce a blizzard over much of Kivalliq as strong northwesterly winds gust to 80 km/h. Frequent whiteout conditions will continue for another day along with near extreme wind chill values of -50 or colder.

Conditions will improve somewhat tonight for most townsites as the winds gradually diminish. However, gusts to 60 km/h persist over the area on Sunday and poor visibilities in blowing snow may linger for one more day before finally easing Sunday night.

###

Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to reduced visibility.

Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 6 hours.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NUstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #NUStorm.
