Blizzard WarningIssued at 03:52 Saturday 22 January 2022
Dangerous blizzard continues today with visibilities frequently near zero.
An intense low pressure system near Southampton Island continues to produce a blizzard over much of Kivalliq as strong northwesterly winds gust to 80 km/h. Frequent whiteout conditions will continue for another day along with near extreme wind chill values of -50 or colder.
Conditions will improve somewhat tonight for most townsites as the winds gradually diminish. However, gusts to 60 km/h persist over the area on Sunday and poor visibilities in blowing snow may linger for one more day before finally easing Sunday night.
Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to reduced visibility.
Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 6 hours.
