Wind Warning

Issued at 10:54 Thursday 17 October 2019

An intense low pressure system over New England will approach the Maritimes today and cross the region on Friday.

A band of very strong southeasterly winds gusting to 90 km/h is continuing to spread across Nova Scotia today and will reach the eastern Mainland and Cape Breton this afternoon. Higher than normal water levels and heavy surf can be expected along the Atlantic coast and areas near Northumberland Strait today, especially near high tide.

Winds will diminish and become southerly later today, starting in the southwest near noon and over eastern areas later this afternoon or this evening.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.
