Winter Storm Warning

Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

A winter storm will bring snow, blowing snow, freezing rain and strong winds.

Total snowfall: 30 to 45 cm northern and western mainland, 15 to 30 cm elsewhere.

Freezing rain duration: 4 to 8 hours.

Maximum wind gusts: 80 to 110 km/h.

Locations: Mainland Nova Scotia and portions of western Cape Breton.

Time span: Today through Sunday morning.

Remarks: Snow at times heavy and blowing snow will begin early this morning over southwestern regions and will quickly spread northeastward throughout the morning. Visibility will be near zero at times this morning and early Saturday afternoon. Road closures are possible.

Snow is expected to transition to an extended period of freezing rain or ice pellets throughout the day, before changing to rain later in the day in some regions. The highest snowfall totals are expected over western and northern regions. Freezing rain will be most significant inland away from the immediate Atlantic coast.

Strong wind gusts will likely cause power and utility outages this afternoon and again late overnight into Sunday morning, Strongest wind gusts are expected over exposed coastal locations.

Temperatures will fall well below zero Sunday morning behind the storm, causing standing water to freeze.

Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Utility outages may occur.
