Rainfall Warning

Summary

Snowfall, followed by significant rainfall is expected. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.

Total snowfall: ranging from 5 to 10 cm in southwestern Newfoundland to less than 2 cm over the Avalon.

Total rainfall: 50 to 80 mm, with locally higher amounts over higher terrain.

Locations: southwestern Newfoundland, the south coast of Newfoundland, and the Avalon Peninsula.

Time span: Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon.

Remarks: Snow will begin Saturday afternoon then change to rain, at times heavy, in the evening. The rain will taper off on Sunday morning for southwestern areas of the island, and on Sunday afternoon for southeastern Newfoundland and the Avalon.

Significant snowmelt and runoff will occur.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.

Maximum gusts: southeasterly 80 km/h, except up to 110 along parts of the coast.

Locations: the Avalon Peninsula and the northeast coast of Newfoundland.

Time span: overnight Saturday night until Sunday morning.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.

Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.
