Special Weather Statement

Issued at 15:54 Friday 24 January 2020

Potential for significant rain and warming on Monday.

Rainfall amounts: 5 to 10 mm, with locally higher amounts likely along the south coast.

Locations: southern and eastern Newfoundland.

Timespan: overnight Sunday night through Monday afternoon.

Remarks: A low pressure system is expected to cross the island on Monday. Precipitation may begin as a brief period of freezing rain overnight on Sunday before quickly transitioning to rain Monday morning as temperatures rise. Rainfall warnings may be required.

The rainfall will be accompanied by temperatures several degrees above zero. Areas with deep existing snow pack will be vulnerable to significant snowmelt and water runoff, with localized flooding possible.

Where possible, the public is advised to clear storm drains prior to the rain in order to aid in water drainage.
