Special Weather Statement

Issued at 16:12 Friday 22 October 2021

Very windy conditions are in forecast beginning Sunday for Vancouver Island and neighbouring regions along the Strait of Georgia into Monday.

Locations: West Vancouver Island, North Vancouver Island, East Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, Southern sections of Howe Sound, Southern Gulf Islands, Greater Victoria, Metro Vancouver - Southwest, Central, North Shore especially over exposed coastal areas.

Time span: Sunday morning to Monday afternoon.

Remarks: A strong rapidly deepening low pressure system from the Pacific will approach west of Vancouver Island on Sunday and begin to bring rain and strong southeasterly winds of 70 to 90 km/h with gusts possibly exceeding 100 km/h to West & North Vancouver Island in the morning.

Strong southeasterly winds of 50 to 70 km/h gusting to 90 will develop over East Vancouver Island Sunday afternoon. The strong winds will persist through Sunday night and strengthen on Monday morning across the coastal regions of the Strait of Georgia, including Greater Victoria, Southern Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast.

As the low pressure system moves closer inland overnight, the western sections of Metro Vancouver and southern sections of Howe Sound will also see southeasterly winds strengthening Monday morning to 50 gusting to 80 km/h before tapering off Monday afternoon.

As of now, there is moderate confidence for the strongest winds to be over West & North Vancouver Island and that the low pressure system will track across northern Vancouver Island. Warnings will likely be issued as the event draws closer and when higher confidence can be established regarding the intensity and track of the system.
